Aunty ji, can we determine the sex of the baby by looking at the shape of the stomach?

Aunty ji, I’m pregnant and the aunties in my colony keep guessing if it’s a boy or a girl just by looking at my stomach. I find it weird… does this actually work? – Amrita, Punjab

Whenever a little guest is about to arrive in a house, the whole neighbourhood goes into detective mode. Some guess that it is a son by looking at the belly, some by looking at the glowing face, while some guess that it is a daughter by the craving for laddus, but if all this was true then there would be no need for a sonography centre, all the aunties of the colony would be handing over the reports, that too with hot paranthas!

Knowing the gender from the shape of the stomach?

People often say that they can tell whether the baby will be a boy or a girl by looking at the shape of the stomach. For example, if the stomach is round, then it is a boy, if it is broad, then it is a girl or vice-versa. Maybe some people have different apprehensions. If the face is glowing, then it is a boy, if the face is pale, then your daughter has taken away your beauty! For example, Amrita Puttar, the crime branch is investigating your face and stomach.

See beta ji, actually all these things are just 'Dadi-Nani science' to entertain. They have no scientific basis. The desire to eat or the changes in the body during pregnancy are related to hormones and nutrition, not to the gender of the child.

Now listen to the real science

Amrita puttar ji, Before believing what the mohalla aunties say, just listen to science once. You might already know this, but every human body has two sex chromosomes. And those chromosomes are what actually decide whether the baby will be a boy or a girl.

  • Mummy always gives X chromosome,
  • Papa will either give X (for a daughter) or Y (for a son)

So beta ji, what the child will be, this is finalized in the beginning itself. Understand it like a match fix. Later, even if you eat the whole shop of pickles or sweets, the sex of the child is not going to change! That is, whether it will be a son or a daughter, it is decided at the time of conception itself.

And yes, listen to one thing!

It is illegal to know the sex of the foetus in India. Under the PCPNDT Act, both getting a sex determination test done or trying to get one done are punishable offences. In such a case, be it the doctor or the parents, everyone can be punished. So the dialogue “Jhalak Dikhla Ja” looks good only in movies, not in real life.

What to do now?

Amrita Puttar, understand one thing that whether it is a son or a daughter, it is God's blessing. his/her health, his/her smile and that little finger which will hold your finger and make the first relation with the world, that is the real magic. So pay attention to these things during pregnancy-

  • Eat good food
  • Get enough sleep
  • Follow the doctor's advice
  • Stay away from stress
  • Embrace your coming child with all your heart

Aunty's message

Beta ji, eating sweet and sour food does not change your child but your love and care can definitely create his world. See you again with a cup of tea and lots of interesting talks.
