Is it normal to have severe hip pain during periods?

Aarushi used to have severe pain in the hip area during periods. At first she ignored it but the pain started increasing. Why do hips hurt during periods?

Having severe pain in the anus during periods may seem a bit strange or worrying, but in most cases it is a common problem. There can be many reasons behind this, which are happening in the body at that time. This can happen to many girls or women, so let's understand why this happens.

There is quite severe pain

We can understand that many people suffer from severe pain during their periods and in such a situation, pain in the anus or hips is just like you have gone out somewhere and you meet someone whom you were not prepared for. We know that you will not like this at all. Even though this is common, there is a scientific reason behind it.

During periods, many people feel sharp pain in the anus. This is called "proctalgia fugax" in medical terms. It means a sudden, severe pain in the anus, rectum or hips. This pain can last for a few seconds to a few minutes.

Why does this happen?

Usually, there’s no clear reason behind it, but it can be linked to stress, constipation, or periods. Even though it doesn't last long, the pain can feel very strong. Such pain can occur due to many reasons. Such as-

  • Contraction of uterus during periods
  • Spasms in the muscles of the pelvic region, which occur involuntarily and sometimes with pain. These spasms are caused by changes or movements in the uterus, which can put pressure on the nerves near the buttocks and due to this severe pain can be felt there.
  • Digestive problems - During this period, some people may complain of frequent bowel movements, diarrhea or sometimes constipation. These changes can also cause pain or discomfort in the buttocks and lower abdomen.

Don't ignore the reasons

Now it is important to understand that there can be some other reasons behind such pain, which cannot be ignored and when it is persistent, then it becomes necessary to contact a doctor. All these conditions can cause similar pain near the pelvis or buttocks. Such as-

  • Endometriosis (when tissue like the lining of the uterus starts growing in other parts of the body)
  • Fibroids (lumps formed in the uterus)
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) (problem related to the digestive system)

When should you see a doctor

If you notice the following symptoms, it is important to see a doctor.

  • Recurrent anal pain that does not subside quickly
  • Severe pain, even if it lasts only for a few seconds
  • Repeated bleeding from the anus
  • Feeling dizzy or faint
  • Pain that spreads from the anus to another part of the body
  • Fever, chills or any unusual fluid discharge from the anus

Such symptoms may not be just normal period cramps, so it is important to get yourself checked on time. It is also important to pay attention to your own body and understand the changes taking place in it.
